My doubts built up over a period of years before I left the IMT, but their peddling of pro-Putin conspiracy theories and sexual assault coverups were what finally pushed me out of this utterly rotten organization. The IMT’s degeneration has far surpassed that of the CWI under Taaffe (as rotten as he is, I don’t ever recall Taaffe shielding sexual predators), and there seems to be no low to which the IMT will not sink. What we have seen so far is probably the tip of a very ugly iceberg. The leadership lied to our faces about the predators being expelled, and while scum like Mitch Thompson were readmitted, a group of IMT members in Chicago was expelled for independently investigating the sexual assault coverup. These people in Chicago were smeared as a “secret clique” (loaded language).
Reading Lifton was a real eye opener as to how groups like the IMT deceive, recruit, and maintain people in their utterly rotten organization. I think a basic understanding of so-called brainwashing (Lifton prefers calling it “thought reform”) is essential to anyone who values critical thinking and freedom of mind in general. There’s no shortage of cults and destructive totalitarian organizations who wish to prey on those who are going through turbulent times and/or have aspirations of changing the world.
I am glad that you have broken free of that awful cult and that Lifton’s brilliant work on cult analysis is helping you to make sense of it all!
